How to do network benchmark virtual machines

I am doing test to a netwrok service that run as man in the middle in the hypervisor level. I wish to create a VM with heavy traffic and see the impact of the service on the traffic. Does there are standard of examine machine network traffic in virtualization world? Or, what are the recommended way to generate traffic from/to Virtual Machine?
